Carousel
The carousel is a three-dimensional memory of childhood. The experience of riding it is real, yet also a fantasy etched into human memory (with the perspective of time) as a reservoir of emotions and images from the past. Nostalgia.
The carousel/merry-go-round is a structure of a circular stage – a dynamic theatre with permanent "actors," rich, colorful scenery, movement, music, lighting, and a changing audience.
This circular stage spins in an endless rotational motion around a central axis and is activated by the principle of centrifugal force, which creates an outward pull on the body situated on it. This rotational movement, together with the up-and-down motion, creates a mesmerizing sensory experience for the participants.
This motion is applied to the toy soldiers that are also part of the fantasy of childhood memory. They are the actors in a play with colorful costumes, uniforms, symbols, weapons, and flags. They are in an endless cycle of war games.
The human carousels express, through the body, philosophical ideas of human experience.
